In our last article, we mentioned the country home to the largest castle in Europe. This time, hear about the country home to the most castles in Europe. The Czech Republic’s borders encompass more than 2000 castles and chateaux, one of them being the largest ancient castle (Prague Castle, 570m long and 128m wide). Nicknamed “the city of a hundred spires,” Prague is one of many fabulous stops along your journey through the Czech Republic.

Useful Tips for Traveling to Czech Republic

Know What You’re Drinking

The Czech Republic has a crazy party scene, especially Prague. A typical night out follows more of a Spanish timeline than most other countries in Europe, meaning it starts much later. You will get to enjoy many Czech beverages while out and about (The Czech Republic consumes the most amount of beer in the world). However, don’t just drink whatever is handed to you, as it will not always be beer. Slivovice is a Moravian drink that is very popular in The Czech Republic. Be wary of this cocktail – it has the maximum amount of alcohol content compared to almost any drink in the world. Unless you’re a veteran drinker, this may not be the beverage for you.

Eat Consciously

If you’re a particularly healthy person, be prepared for Czech cuisine. You may want to sneak a couple extra runs in before your trip as the food is not particularly nutritious. Most three-course meals consist of a soup or stew, followed by a meat dish, finished off with a rich dessert. The Czech Republic is most famous for its meat dumplings, which aren’t actually what they sound like. They are actually roast chicken with gravy and potatoes. Enjoy yourself while there and go for a hike or three when your trip is over!

Buy Proper Souvenirs

Purchasing souvenirs to take back to your family and friends is fun in any country. However, you should know what gifts classic trinkets are versus commercially-made tourist trinkets. In the Czech Republic, you’re going to want to look for marionettes, anything with garnet in it, and bohemian crystals. The Czech Republic is also famous for herbal liqueurs and cosmetics that are made of beer!

What To Do in Czech Republic

Ice Hockey

Ice hockey is the Czech Republic’s most popular sport. Many Czech players have been good enough to make it into the National Hockey League, most famously Jaromir Jagr, arguably one of the greatest hockey players in the world. If you’re interested, you should attend a Czech Extraliga game. They usually take place between September and April, playing against 14 other professional teams.

Sněžka

Sněžka is the Czech Republic’s highest point of elevation. Located at the peak of the Krkonoše mountains, it reaches an impressive height of 1,603 meters. Enjoy a life-affirming hike and jaw-dropping views.

Škoda

If you’re interested in cars, you may be interested to learn that the world-famous automobile manufacturer Škoda Auto is headquartered in the Czech Republic. Founded in 1895 and located in the city of Mladá Boleslav, the HQ may be worth a visit to some of you car-junkies.

What NOT to do in Czech Republic

Jaywalk

Jaywalking is illegal in the Czech Republic. It’s not illegal out of politeness’ sake, but more out of safety. Czech roads are filled not only with cars, busses, and cyclists, but also trams. You’re only allowed to cross the street at designated areas rather than walking across the tram tracks. Keep yourself safe and abide by the local laws.

Use Euros

While the Czech Republic is indeed within the European continent, it does not employ the Euro currency. Instead, it employs the Czech Koruna. One koruna is equivalent to both 0.041 Euro and 0.041 USD. While you should always be wary of pickpockets, it is in your best interest to keep cash on you. Not all Czech establishments will accept cards.

Get Into an Unmarked Taxi

Unmarked taxis are the biggest scam you can get yourself into in the Czech Republic. Hundreds of scammers ride around in yellow cars with no identification, hoping tourists will be gullible enough to hop in. While they will likely get you to your destination, they will likely charge you double or triple what a regular taxi would. Don’t lose money being naïve.
